Why should a timber break bank?

We have a wooden bench at the tips of our stairs in our house. We bought this bank already assembled, but without any treatment to the wood. We used a paint and then a clear lacquer coating on them. It has in-house over 2 years and all of a sudden, on the one hand, there is a crack down one side. The bank is one that has storage inside, and the crack goes from top to bottom and from outside to inside. It is always something about them or do not sit once people sit on it and we can not understand why it would have suddenly cracked. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?
