I found a house that I really love. It’s great from the outside and has so many details that we love, but it has hand scraped wood floors in the kitchen and living room. I do like the hand scraped look, but the color is awful. It’s that really dark mocha that’s almost black. And it would be one thing if it was in a modern home, but it’s a historical home and it just looks weird. I didn’t know if you could refinish them and stain them a different color. I would hate replacing it because it looks brand new. Is there anything I can do to change the color of the flooring? It’s really bumming me out because I love the look of the hand scraped wood, but the color would never stop bugging me.

Do you know what kind of wood it is? If it is really dark it is likely finished with some type of stain or colour combination with a sealing lacquer. You could potentially sand this all off (Lots of work) and refinish it without the stain, this all depends on the wood you are dealing with it could be a naturally very dark wood, but I kinda doubt it. Either way if you do anything it will be a lot of work, and potentially cost a lot of money.
If you consult with a wood finishing expert and find out what type of finish is on there and what type of wood underneath it may be possible that you could bleach it and get some type of consistent finish out of it but it would be pretty sketchy.

I have been in the house-keeping, maid-service industry for 4 years. Kind of depends on the wood you chose. Have they got a laminate-coating, or are they bare? If laminate, DO NOT USE murphy’s oil soap, (it will dull the shine) do not get the floors overly wet when you do mop (it will leave water spots and streaks), and if you are really into keeping them looking great, get a towel wet and HOT, use murphy’s squirt and mop, or even a teeny bit of dishwashing liquid (rinse well) squeeze the towel well, get on hands and knees, and wash them by hand. Now, if they are bare, I would recommend the murphy’s oil soap, that will penetrate the wood and keep them from drying out, but only mop when absolutely neccessary, with a very well squeezed mop. (Or by hand, like before.)
