Yes you can do it, but it might cost a little more say if a transition strip is $ 5 this might cost $ 15 but it can be done. Do not listen to the contractor! Also he might not know any better, we are not all the same. Some of us read and others only know what we know! Hope that helps!

There are too many unanswered issues here that you have not mentioned for anyone to give you a reasonable answer.
For instance, you have not told us the resolution that each of the cameras connected to these 8 channels will have. You have also not told us if any video compression will be used or not on these video streams. Other questions to ask.. do these cameras record all the time or do they only record when triggered? How much video do you want to be able to record?
My out of the box Directv high def DVR had something like 320 GB and would store something like 40 or 50 hours of high def compressed video. Obviously if these 8 channels are each high def, you are down to just a few hours worth of all the camera recording and, as an example, there doesn’t appear to be enough capacity there to record an 8 hour shift of all cameras.
I don’t know how this system is going to be used and I don’t know how much video you feel you might need to record. These are requirements such as the ability to record x hours of video at y resolution are requirements I suspect you should be defining to your vendors. At the very least, you should be asking these specific questions to your vendors.
