Loving Long Iceland nostalgia

If you say to someone in Maine that you took the ferry to Long Iceland to visit public gardens, they would see you and think: “What public gardens?” They would conjure images of an outpost in Casco Bay populated by people who fish for a living and have little time to garden and summer residents who might have a small vegetable garden, flower bed or hedge of rugosa rose. But the public gardens? There are not found. It is a simple, where the word “are not noticeable”, it is very common. I like Long Iceland, Maine – my kind of people, my kind of Gärten.Letztes years I was asked the “other” Long Iceland to go, right next to the big island to New York City, for a day trip. Never been there – and was really based on some of the things I had read about the Hamptons, the area that I would attend – I was not looking forward to it. Who wants to ride all day, take a ferry and then drive some more of that to “McMansions” or rub in an overpriced restaurant with high rollers from New York City? The journey I have, however, and although it is quite different from Long Iceland, Maine, it was not what I had envisioned wurde.Ich a bit of time before the ferry from New London, Connecticut, so I took a moment to the newly completed Athenian Garden in a Bag Park downtown kill to see. With a Greek-inspired wall paintings and sculptures, it was worth a visit. If you have more time to spend in New London, a half-day visit to the Connecticut College Arboretum is also preclude the ferry ride over the Long Sound to Orient Point Iceland proved pleasant on board the 1,000-passenger MV John H. There were many interesting sights, including lighthouses and the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut, where submarines are built and maintained for the U.S. Navy . One of the subs was adopted by the ferry – something I had never seen in Casco Bay Get out! from the ferry, I was ready for the glitz and glitter of Long Iceland. The first hour of the trip was, however, through the farming areas in rural Suffolk County, the leading agricultural county in New York. tomatoes were ripe on the vine and potatoes have been dug. After another ride on the ferry to Shelter Iceland, I moved to Bridgehampton, where BMWs, Mercedes and Jaguar replaces John Deere tractors for an hour früher.Keine celebrities have been spotted, but I was immediately struck by the miles of privet hedges, Ligustrum spp., shaped, and most of them, around sharp edges. You demarcated property lines and prevent any from seeing through them or over them. I was fascinated of the hedges and tried to seek Vincent Simone, a local woody plant expert, whose books I reviewed this year in PPP’s Early Spring issue. Unfortunately I was unable to contact him until I to Maine back (see box on the left ).’ve gone on every road, trimming used crews high performance on ladders hedge trimmers, the naturally gangly privet saw something perfect, almost to form. Back in Maine on Long Iceland, a privet hedge, perhaps only once pruned in years, and sometimes, that would be with a chainsaw to bekommen.Ich soon came to the Conser-Madoo vancy in Sagaponack and the gardens of Robert Dash, probably the best as an artist whose medium canvas known. I found quickly that this multi-talented character – I would to use the term “gentleman,” but I knew he would refuse – had an uncanny eye for the development of landscapes. “I do not know in a way that I paint Gartenoder garden, as I would employ the brush, although the process is often the same – both are art of the wrist, the widest, largest type of signature, if you will, highly idiosyncratic, to do the result of lots and lots of stumbling, and looked up turns and twists until everything fits and remains to the scale of one’s intention, “Dash in Notes From Madoo: A garden wrote in the Hamptons (see Book Reviews on page 132). I felt it may be no better representation of his art than his Gärten.Im May 1965, Dash first saw the land that had become his passion. He bought the package – a crude piece of agricultural land with a 18th-century barn – and 1967 was on the way to the creation of Madoo, the Scottish dialect in an old means “my dove.” quickly when I arrived he took me in his gardens, which were developed as a series of rooms. We strolled past the boxwoods by The Knot Garden and down the Rose Walk, a walled-scoring features. My eye was by tire with climbing roses at a Exedra, pulled extend a Greek brick structure with a round window and a linear mirror the visual axis winding. That was only the first of many designs befitting the garden of an artist. I have ginkgo trees, for example seen, but none to use the closely trimmed boxwoods, or “balls-Box,” as Dash’s doing. “More like a savage blow,” said er.Wir four beds Quincunx passed, with a fastigiate yew standing at attention at each corner of each square bed. It was a recluse in another hidden garden, and Dash proudly showed me an Oriental bridge surrounded by native plants. As we walked, he explained that the key to successfully grow a lot of manure and Rebschnitt.Baumschnitt right? I was on privet, that did not look like perfect square looking, and I found what I wanted. Dash has taken from mature privet and treated them in a way that an opportunity for all gardeners with overgrown hedges – an opportunity to make a statement with plants, to tell the visitors, will be “Wow,” as I did. Imagine 20-meter-high privet – with suitcases the size of small trees – cut up a good 10 meters. “Now aged and gnarled, they still look like the legs of the young ballerinas , wears ballerinas, but young old rehearsal stockings, prilled and Broken, “Dash said in light of the adult education system Wirkung.Nach a stroll by the many different garden rooms, it was time to have a glass of wine. The wine, a discussion about what to Madoo change resulted, and the quantity of grape juice consumption may be influenced to have the fate of the Knot Garden. We agreed that it disturbed the view down to the scoring of the Exedra, and it must go! Running late, I reluctantly left Madoo and came to the longhouse reserve, as it was for the day closed. A busload of visitors was out, accompanied, for a view of the gardens, with no one else allowed there, and creates the setting sun light, the not have been better, could have for photography. But too late also meant I did not have much time with Matko Tomicic, the Executive Director, or at any time with Jack Lenor Larsen, this wonderful landscape, with works by artists from Roy Lichtenstein to Yoko Ono created are filled verbringen.Gartenfreunde to nave are not so much for the plant collections and for the ambitious landscaping, and for a variety of rooms and sometimes as an outdoor room. Among them, the Red Guards, the Dune garden, the garden and the grass Lotus Pond, in addition to several allées. longhouse receives about 6,000 visitors jährlich.Rund 300 varieties of daffodil bloom in April / May, especially in white and pink. The property has about 60 bamboo varieties, from low pygmies to 50 feet high ridges , 100 and 100 varieties of conifer Ziergräser.Die sculptures at the longhouse provide punctuation – and a target. While many people do not want might to the equivalent of several blocks to walk to a new tree to see, they are often willing to Yoko Ono piece may be on the western border of the reserve, or to a new or known professional experience, including pieces of glass and ceramics by Toshiko Takaezu visit and Dale Chihuly.Während this garden art out of reach financially for many PPP reader, the concept can be used for Most landscapes are implemented. can inspire long house, gardeners to go beyond the ordinary and necessary opportunities, is a unique Landschaft.Eine other public gardens in the area that is well worth mentioning, at the Bridge Gardens Trust. The gardens were for the season close for one day before my arrival, but curator Harry Neyens was gracious enough to provide a description. “Bridge Gardens Trust has over 800 antique and new roses, a knot garden, a historical collection of culinary, pharmaceutical, textile and dyeing herbs, a lavender parterre, an assortment of shaped trees, a water garden, two shade gardens, a bamboo grove and patterns plantings, “he said.” (We) receive 1,500 visitors a year. “The next time I visit Long Iceland, make sure I will I get it before the deadline of October 31, if you enjoy visiting wineries, there are many do on Long Iceland from which to choose. The soil (a clay), air (like Bordeaux) and the influence of the ocean for all the perfect wine . A stop at the wolves Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack proved how well suited Long Iceland is in winemaking. The wolves Estate Selection Chardonnay was rated “Best Long Iceland Chardonnay” by The Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Even if you are not a fan of wine to make the countryside and the vineyards along the estate is worth a stoppen.Es Here are many options for accommodations in the Hamptons, from bed-and-breakfast establishments motels. I chose for the head to the easternmost tip of Long Iceland Montauk. The city has an old feel summer beach community, to enjoy with many old-style motels and 5,000 hectares of public beaches. It also has a lot of history: The Montauk Point Lighthouse was opened in 1787 and is Montauk Point, where Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough 30 000 Riders after the Spanish-American War landeten.Es are a variety of excellent restaurants to eat in Montauk, and I asked about the best place to regional specialties. The locals tell me all contributed to the Shagwong Restaurant, and proved a meal freshly caught seafood their recommendations korrigieren. Was is my most lasting memory of this day trip? The eccentricity of Robert Dash, the privet hedges, the sun behind the glass Chihuly wands at Longhouse Reserve, or sunrise at Montauk Point? None of the above. This memorable as these experiences were, they can not simply my visit to Marder’s Nursery.Für a tree lover, nothing on the root ball of a 20-foot ginkgo compare sitting ready to be installed at the cost of $ 25,000. Yes, $ 25,000! This kindergarten Bridgehamp-ton is unbelievable. It was Kathleen and Charlie Marder about a quarter of a century ago, began with the purpose of transplanting large trees by mechanical means. The fact that they do, and in addition to the big trees they have now a full- service garden center, a landscaping division and an art collection on the property. If you embed a large plant for your landscape, visit them and ask to see the 40-foot arborvitae. If you think it is in your landscape fit, use the checkbook ready because can for about $ 40,000 it will sell. And, of course, if Marder plant the tree, it comes with a two-year Garantie.Es was time to head back to Maine. If I had my his opinion changed about the Long Iceland I like best? Perhaps, but I have to the New Yorker you would visit a few more times in order to assess fairly. Of course, if someone bought me a $ 25 000 that ginkgo is no competition!
