Red Rum won his first Grand National in 1973 to his great debut race in eight years. Question : Does anyone know whether or not it is true the National Guard Serving in Iraq get a bonus after every tour?
Not that they don’t deserve it for managing to go to hell and come back. I was speaking to a young man in a retail store the other day. He said he was 18 (!) and going back for his third tour (incredible.) He matter of factly said he had 37 kills (his words) on his last tour as armoured tank personnel. He talked a bit about his family and then mentioned that he got $ 50,000. after his first tour. I have also heard that new recruits get a signing bonus upward of $ 10, 000.
No amount of money is sufficient, as I said earlier. This is not a lot especially when you consider that a second year lawyer in a prestigious firm might get a similar bonus and not ever be in harms way. Still, it seems unfair inducement for such young people, especially if they are from poor families, which most are. Anyone know?
I felt the young man was exaggerating. Given his age and the need for training before being sent to Iraq and the length of tours (several months, right?) I thought he was a bit young for 3 tours. That was just the conversation. I would appreciate responders not getting caught up in those details and just speaking on the issue of bonuses. Thanks.

Question : Mid-tour leave for National Guard soldiers in Iraq?
An officer who deployed a couple of times to Iraq told me that now that National Guard units are not in Iraq as long, that they may not grant you mid-tour leave.
Has anyone experienced that or knows if this is the case now?
I have seen some answers here that they are not granting it in some cases.
Like not everyone gets leave now if you are in the National Guard and deployed there.

Well from what i understand US troops are actually starting to leave Iraq in large numbers, it is possible that US troops could start to receive mid tour leaves like the British but I definitely would not count on it.
