Gas leaks are a serious business. This is not scaremongering – people die escaping gas, so to know about the dangers and how to deal with them is important. Whether you know it from water, central heating, gas stove or outdoor grill, how to check for gas leaks is an essential skill to stay safe and – as a lesser concern – you save money on your energy bill.

There are several telltale signs that you have a gas leak in your house, but usually, the most obvious sign is the smell. It is a common misconception, but natural gas is odorless actually, in part, why it is so dangerous as people can inhale toxic fumes, is without realizing it. To combat this problem, gas suppliers add artificially a “odouriser” or chemical liquid, the gas with an unpleasant smell impairment, which alerts the senses to its presence.

Under no circumstances, if you suspect a gas leak you should light a match or switch on / off all electrical appliances. Even switching off a light bulb can be enough to spark an explosion, so extreme care contact in these circumstances.
