Question : Our kitchen has Fluorescent lighting, how do we upgrade & How do we make it recessed lighting instead?
We just moved into a house built in 1993, and I would prefer to have lamp fixtures or recessed lighting instead of the ugly fluorescent light above. Can we do it ourselves or do we need to hire an electrician? Thank you for your input!!

What a good question. We just dealt with that in our kitchen.
We had fluorescents that were in a 4 x 6 recess with clear panels that made the ceiling one flat surface.
But we read that you should light your kitchen like an operating room. So, we realized that that was what we had been missing in the kitchen was good lighting.
Since we were doing a complete remodel anyway, we took out the diffuser panels, took down the existing light fixture and used the wiring coming down into the recessed ceiling to wire into the new fixture which is a light bar with 8 bulbs, bistro style.
We took down all of the rails, painted the narrow wall up to the recessed ceiling and then put up the same border paper that I had used on the top of the walls below the lower part of the ceiling. I covered the recessed ceiling with the same white tin I used on the lower ceiling, and then we put up the light fixture—what a difference.
And, a crisp new look. We put a dimmer switch on the light so we can change the brightness and it has been so useful.
I don’t know what your size of recess is but it is very easy to accomplish. My husband helped me because it took two people to hold the new fixture up and to get the old one down, but we just used wire nuts to marry the fixture wires to the existing wires.
Our other choice was to put up track lighting with movable directional lights, which is also very easy.

Question : Why is bathroom ventilation not down next to toilet instead of in ceiling?
This way smells would be pulled out of bathrooms by fan before they can disseminate into rest of air. Perhaps not feasible for residential homes, but public bathrooms ought to have this. Yes, it would mean more piping, but would eliminate need for courtesy flushes and wasted water.

Two reasons.
1 The waste gases we all produce are lighter than air and will rise to the ceiling and thus the extraction is there to capture and eject them.
2 Our own body heat while in occupancy of the facility, will assist in taking the gases up too, as heat rises.
If the veny was next to the toilet, gases would accumulate in the ceiling area and not escape. Eventually they would accumulate downwards to head height, you can imagine the rest.

I have three stand alone (by stand alone I mean not being able to hook up to a main computer) divices that are currently hooked up to three printers via USB. That is a big waste of space. How would I hook the three USB devices to ONE printer?

you can not hook up anything to a printer only the printer can be hooked to the computer

Question : Should I go to design school in Spokane instead of New York City?
I was accepted to the New York school of Interior Design in NYC, but they would only accept 10 credits.( I have about 3 yrs of accredited college)
On the other hand, Washington State University has accepted me as a junior level student. But its in Spokane Washington. Spokane is near the Idaho border, and is a small farming town. New York is well, NYC!
I lived in NYC for 5 months because I was attending the Fashion Institute of Technology as a transfer student. I decided not to continue there because they accepted me as a freshman as well. That’s why I tried the other school.
Will having more opportunities while in school be worth the extra time and MONEY spent? I will be in 90,000 or so after school in NYC.
Also I’m 23 years old. I’m really freaking out about the time issue of getting school done too.

If you are using some liquid, I doubt it would look anywhere near as good as what the original did. Bathroom tile and even the glaze on a tub goes through a heating process to set it. You aren’t going to get that look with any after-market application I think. I’d recommend replacing them. I’m surprized the tile needs reglazed. That should only need cleaned. A good tile glazing should last for years and years and years. Real glaze is basically the same thing as glass.
