I wouldn’t waste money on the expensive nail grinders- all they are is a dremel tool with a different name on it. I would hit Wal-Mart or Home Depot and get one of the cheap ones. That’s what we use- works great!

It’s also what show people were using before anyone ever thought of slapping a cutesy name on them and selling them for a bunch of $ $ $ $

I need a pet nail grinder for my Schnauzer but am not sure about Pedipaws. Does anyone have other suggestions?

Question : I need a pet nail grinder for my Schnauzer but am not sure about Pedipaws. Does anyone have other suggestions?
I would like to get a better quality grinder because the Pedipaws looks cheaply made but it DOES have a guard so I am not sure. Help Please???
Mike G – thanks for your reply. Trouble is, Scooter is difficult when it comes to trimming his nails so we thought the grinder might be less traumatic for him. The Vet is more than happy to trim his nails for us and it is free but we would like to keep them trimmed in between his 6 month physicals. Thanks. again, though.
So, is a guard necessary? We have a dremel but thought perhaps we needed a guard.

ummm why a grinder ? What did they do befor grinders? ummm clippers, the vet will for free show you how to do it if you cant follow the directions on the back of the clippers. Let me know how it works out for you. Also the vet clips my dog for free when he goes in for whatever, all you have to do is ask it takes them about 5 min.

Getting my dog used to the nail grinder?

1

Question : Getting my dog used to the nail grinder?
My mother and I purchased a dremel grinder that we were told by our vet would be a much safer and comfortable alternative to cutting our dog’s nails with a guillotine style clipper. Thing is, she’s a little anxious with it. How can I make her a bit more comfortable with the sound/aspect of having it around her?
If it helps, she was incredibly anxious about the other clipper and refused to go near it.

You’re going to have to take it slow…holding her down and forcing her will just traumatize her.

You can start by leaving the dremel turned off, and let her come and sniff it and see it’s not evil. Maybe give her treats when she does investigate it.

Once she’s used to it, then try turning it on and sitting it down so she can get used to the noise.

You could also practice just handling her feet a lot with your hands, not the dremel yet.

After she is good with you handling her feet, then maybe try touching the dremel to her claws when it is off.

Once she is used to you handling her feet and hearing the dremel turned on, try to dremel one claw for just a second, then let her go and give her a treat.

Just keep building up.

Remember to keep your practice sessions very short, and give lots of treats/praise.

A good thing to remember is that when you do start to dremel her nails is to only touch the dremel to the nail for a second at a time. It heats up very quickly and will hurt her.

Here is a good site on dremeling your dog’s nails http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/dremel/dremel.html

Edit: In the meantime if her claws get too long you can try to get her to play on pavement some to wear them down. Just keep an eye on her pads to make sure they’re not getting worn down and bleeding.

My puppy is scratching my legs and arms. I cut his nails but then they are still sharp. He is a chihuahua mix so he is not going outside in this Buffalo, NY weather. What else can I do? I was gonna try to grind them so they are smooth. Or maybe paint them with something so they are not so rough?

You can hurt your dog by trimming his nails, if you can’t do it right of course.

Get them trimmed by the Vet.

There is a new dog nail grinder on tv, I’ve seen the commercial only once but it looks neat! How can I get it?

It looks like an egg, you put the dog’s nail in and it grinds the tip without hurting the animal, looks much safer than using a dremel.
It has the form of an egg and is white, doesn’t look like the peticure at all. The dog’s nail is put inside and the machine grinds what needs to be grinded. I saw the infomercial only once and couln’t catch the email or phone #.

Unfortuantly any nail clipping products will hurt the dog a little, because of the way the nail are shaped!
