I plan to take away the carpet in my basement, and install some other type of flooring. A friend recommended the engineering hardwood flooring. Yet I heard that a little moisture would be disastrous for this type of flooring. Is there a better option out there?

you need to do a moisture test on your floor first to see if it is feasible first you get a gallon Ziploc and tape (duct tape) it to an exposed area of concrete leave it for 24 hrs if moisture collects on the bag you need another flooring. you could go with laminate and get a moisture barrier padding to go under it, or there is a flexible floating PVC flooring out now the more pricier ones have texture that feels like wood and looks so real i have seen people actually touch it before they believed it wasn’t

Through my experience, you can not really repair the indentions in the wood.
Since it is a new floor and you don’t want it to be like that forever you can replace that individual board if you have some left and one of the ones that are left are exactly the same size.
The installer can cut that board out…..Cut the tongue off of the new and install. He may have to drill a couple of small holes and drive some finish nails but that can be covered with wood putty.

Engineered wood is an all wood product made of several plys of wood criss crossed for strength just as ply wood is.
Its usually made of three plys but I ve seen cheaper stuff with as many as 5 plys. Its a thinner wood ( 3/8ths inch thick on average but you can get thinner and thicker) It s made for places where thickness is an issue and you can t use the standard 3/4″ solid wood.
Its more versatile in installation . than standard wood.
Its made to be glued, nailed ( stapled actually) and made to float in special applications. In certain applications it can be used below grade ( certain applications mind you) .
The wood is made to strict milling so it goes together easy and is very DIY er friendly.

What is the difference between engineered and solid hardwood
3solid wood flooring
A solid hardwood floor has more movement then an engineered hardwood floor. It will expand and contract more, responding to changes in temperature and humidity. Because of this, only engineered wood is recommended for below grade installations. Doug Robinson, of Certified Carpet Distributors, Inc. (distributors of carpet, hardwood, ceramic, and vinyl flooring materials) explains how engineered wood, especially that with a dry saw face, has the beauty of natural would but is more stable. It can be recoated endless times, and refinished at least one if a color change is desired. Engineered wood with a greater number of layers is better — form instance 7-ply engineered wood is better than 3 ply.
