What is the purpose of an air conditioning condenser?

To turn the refrigerant from a vapor back into a liquid by increasing the pressure.

This phase change (from vapor to solid) releases the latent heat that the vapor was carrying, so that it can be blown out of the A/C by the cooling fan.

Carrier HVAC Condenser Fan Motor is very loud.?

Question : Carrier HVAC Condenser Fan Motor is very loud.?
When comparing units with my neighbors ours is VERY loud when running. It sounds like the outside fan on the unit is going bad. If this stops running, what happens to the unit? Will it just not turn on anymore? It’s a Carrier model #: 48gs-024060301. Is it difficult to replace the fan motor?
Thank you Sandshar! I was concerned that since the unit has gas going to it I’d have to shut that off to change the fan motor outside. Really, it looks as simple as taking off the side cover and the fan guard, then just routing the wires and loosening a few nuts to replace the motor. Yes, I read the capacitor needs to be replaced too. It appears that the motor costs around $ 200 and the capacitor would be about $ 20. I’d have to pay for about an hour labor too if I did not do this myself. My neighbors unit (same kind) is so quiet you can’t even hear it turn on and ours is so loud that you can hear it one house away. This just started all of a sudden in the last 3 weeks since it was last serviced.

If the condenser fan motor stops running, the unit will shut off on its high pressure control, if it has one. If the control is manual reset, the unit will stay off until the control is manually reset. If it doesn’t have one or if the control is of the automatic reset variety, the compressor will eventually overheat and shut down on its internal overload protection, in which case it will eventually reset itself and do the same thing over and over until the compressor burns up. No, it is not that difficult to replace the condenser fan motor and run capacitor.

Additional details response:

You’re welcome. It’s really not that difficult if you have a little common sense, a few tools and you pay attention to how everything is taken apart and how the wires are connected. Just be sure to turn off the power! Also, the fan blade might give you a little problem getting it off the shaft. If the shaft sticks through the blade hub, you’ll need to use some sandcloth on it and spray some lubricant (WD-40) to help get the blade off. Be careful not to bend any of the blades.

How much would it cost to get an air conditioning condenser put in and have the AC function properly?

It depends on what size and type of A/C unit you have.

If you have a small window unit, then the answer is “Probably more than it would cost for a brand new A/C unit”.

If you have a large central air conditioning unit, then it’s hard to estimate without knowing more about the system, call a local A/C repair shop.

The same is true if it’s for a car — the cost to repair varies widely depending on the make/model of the car.

Do gas heaters use the outdoor condenser?

Question : Do gas heaters use the outdoor condenser?
My outdoor condenser is covered in snow and ice. It isn’t turning on when the thermostat turns on the central heat. The blower in the attic comes on and the heat seems to be working, but is the outdoor unit supposed to be running also?

Have you heard of an indoor air conditioning condenser?

Question : Have you heard of an indoor air conditioning condenser?
I’m interested in buying a condo in a 5-unit brownstone. It’s a penthouse (4th floor) unit with private roofdeck, but the condenser is not on the roof – instead, the condenser is behind a plywood panel in the master bedroom closet. Has anyone had experience with this? Advice? Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

No, I haven’t heard of a set up like that.

My first thought is that it would be noisy. You will want to hear it running since it is in the bedroom.

Second, where does the heat go? It must be vented to exhaust the heat or it won’t work. There is little point to simply move the heat in to the bedroom.

Could it be exhausting the heat up in to the attic where there is an attic fan? But it needs air flow in too. If the space it is in is not vented well the space will get hot, lower efficiency, and could harm the compressor by overheating which raises pressures.

I have seen water cooled refrigeration. But if it is water cooled those need a constant trickle of water flowing through them and that would be an additional cost.

But, no I have never seen an a/c condensor indoors. Maybe someone else has seen one.

Good Luck.

House air conditioner unit, is it necessary to replace both the condenser and evaporator units at same time?

4

Question : House air conditioner unit, is it necessary to replace both the condenser and evaporator units at same time?
I have an apartment community where each unit has it own separate air conditioner. The condenser units are starting to fail. To replace the entire system (condenser, evaporator, and gas furnace) is very expensive when looking at replacing all them.

Two Contractors No. 1 and No. 2 have proposed replacing only the condenser to keep costs down. Contractor No. 3 has suggested that the evaporators also be replaced due to age (15 years) and also to improve the efficiency. This contractor also indicated that if the evaporator is not changed at the same time to match the condenser, that the manufacture of the new condenser may not honor the warranty.

My questions are:
1.Will a new condenser is more likely to fail if the evaporator unit not replace with a matching one? And if so, is it true that the manufacture will not honor the warrantee?
2.If both the condenser and evaporator units are replaced, is it necessary or recommended to replace the copper tubing (they are separated by approx. 35 feet)?
3.Should I be concern about using R22 or R410 refrigerants?

Although no one suggested replacing the furnace and the ductwork, somehow with such a huge investment I feel that both the furnace and duct work should also be replaced.
(The evaporator and furnace are connected horizontally and the duct work is made up insulated wire and plastic).

Can any tech types provide any recommendations and suggestions?

1. No and No.
2. 95% of the time no. If it is damaged in some way, yes
3. Yes. 22 is being phased out. 410 is being phased in. It is
my understanding that 410 is NOT a drop in refrigerant
will require a new evaporator to match and possibly new
refrigerant lines. Perhaps another answerer can verify
discount this. Investigate thoroughly
Furnace heat exchanger warranty is usually 10 years on older furnaces. Electric furnaces can be repaired almost indefinitely. Your call there. Ductwork No unless someone can point out a very good reason why. Hope this will help you out. Oh, make sure you get new refrigerant line filter/driers with the job, and particularly if you don’t change evap.
