So I said OK we have to come up with something a little more interesting than throwing everything down in the basement. So I came up with a 50s idea, with a drive in movie, and a soda fountain, and the booth. So when it came to colours, with the 50s style they were a little more brave with color. You know you had your greens and their blue together. In this case their sofa was red and I wanted to go with something a little more interesting on the walls and I went with a complementary colour scheme, blue on the main walls, and orange on the key focal wall. And that is a contrast, but at the same time it works beautifully together. Alex- Are there generally accepted colour schemes that you just wouldn’t use, they really do not work. Darlene- When it comes to colour schemes colours that work with each other, you can find a tint or a tone of a colour that will work in its muted form or its saturated form that will work nicely together, it’s just a matter of playing with the colours. Alex- I know that the whole field of the psychology of colour is recognized as a separate area of

Question : How can I change the colour of a wooden brown veneer student desk to a white colour?
Some of the veneer on my daughter’s brown wood desk has been accidentally peeled off . How can this be repaired? Can we take the opportunity to change it to a white-coloured desk by painting it? If so, what steps need to be taken?

London professional interior designers know a big secret: .. model not only through the fabric and wallpaper, they emit light also makes a number of models with a virtual arm wrestling brawl or interaction between light and shadow light patterns are the basis for the rules of the draft from the inside -. snippeted reasons, kinetics etched and curved arches, lines forefront of style and theater of abstract forms

What colour lights deter pesky mosquitoes?

3

Question : What colour lights deter pesky mosquitoes?
We’ve recently purchased our first home. It’s a fairly new, clean-line modern home. The predominant exterior wall colur is a very light grey, with black tones around the eaves & window exteriors etc.

We have a large, open double front door entry – which looks really nice. The double front door is painted black.

Given we are situated in the tropics, mosquitoes and other random insects like to hover at our front door. You can enter/exit with lightning speed, but always guaranteed a mozzie will slip in behind us anyway.

A painter contact thru a friend of ours commented that the black front doors would be attractive to mozzies.

I’ve Googled ‘what colours deter insects’ but have found conflicting advice.

To add to this, the alcove area above this front door (which has a ‘lip’ to it – therefore offering protection from the wet season rains when they are all breeding), has two halogen downlights.

These two downlights are on the same electrical switch as all of the remaining outdoor feature lighting, which does look nice.
Alas – the bright lighting at the front door step only attracts even MORE mozzies during the evening when in use.

Removing these two bulbs and simply not using these two downlights is not an option. We have a video camera doorbell for security purposes, and need to be able to see the person standing at the front door.

I want to remove the two (white) halogen bulbs, and replace with a lower wattage, soft colour bulb. But what colour should I choose???

Please no-one suggest red (since this is a family home and not a brothel) :-D

Current colour options available thru our local lighting retailers are ‘rainbow’ – which I’m told have a pinky/purple tone to them.
Yellow, blue or green.

Which of these colours would best deter insects?????????

Many thanks (in advance) for any responses. It really is greatly appreciated. Cheers!

Yellow lights tend not to attract bugs, and yellow bug lights come in both incandescent bulbs and compact fluorescent bulbs.

Adding Winter Colour With Planters

0

By the time December arrives, many believe the gardening year is at an end? Not so! Although many gardens are distinct by the lack of colour, most of the deciduous plant stock has shed leaf at this stage and the herbaceous perennials have gone to ground for the dormant season. But gardens need not look so gloomy and here are some simple tips to help put the colour back into the garden. Before you begin, some basic planning is required.

Plants – choose wisely, remember to select plants that look good or their best during the winter months. Choose plants with interesting foliage or better still select varieties which flower at this time of year, there are many to choose from including Skimmia, Coprosma, Hellebores, Mahonia, Cyclamens etc.

Size Matters – yes, select planters that provide adequate space for rootball to develop, avoid planting tall and large plants in shallow planters, or planting compact ground cover plants in large planters.

Form & Colour – applies not just to the plants, size and shape also applies to planters. There is such an array of planters from which to choose. Try clustering planters in groups, in Cottage gardens, a range of sizes can look particularly attractive, whereas in a more architectural formal garden, using one size can reinforce the desired effect.

Planting for impact

Here are some suggestions for interesting combinations:

Many other combinations are possible even with the inclusion of seasonal bulbs and seasonal flowers including cyclamens, hyacinths, winter pansies etc. With some simple planning, striking colour combinations can be achieved and all designed to give a much needed lift to the otherwise drab appearance of winter gardens. Select containers with interesting profiles and colour which will extend the contrast with preferred planting colour schemes.

Finally do not forget to water and apply some feed to the planters to avoid any drying out. It may not be sunny but it is surprising how gentle winds can dry out planters.
