I think they make actual plugs for this purpose. I think they make them in several different colors as well. If that isn’t what you are looking for you may want to contact a refinisher they may know some ways to fill in the holes and reglaze to give it a whole look.

They have a little bracket (I got one at Home Depot for $ 2.50 or so) that you can screw into the wall that will hold the faucet in position like it’s a regular shower. You’d have to put a curtain around the tub, though, and that would involve getting one of the circular rods for it and all. It’s pretty do-able though.

I’ve done this b4 4 some of my Victorians, and cleaning with TSP, letting dry thoroughly, painting with an undercoat primer and then your top coat and color.
Usually the job turns out real nice. The back is a rough surface, but your top coat will determine the gloss and smoothness of the process.
