Question : Should I install cellular shades close to the window glass or at the edge of the window frame?
My window frames are about 4″ deep, and the baseboard heat is located beneath each window. For the best energy efficiency, is it better to install cellular shades as close to the window glass as possible, or farther out at the inside edge of the window frame? Or does it not really matter (in which case I’d install at edge of frame for aesthetic reasons)? I read on the Dept. of Energy website to install shades close to the glass, but an interior storm window website said that more distance from the glass is better for insulation (but perhaps interior storm windows and shades are not comparable).

I have done this myself. Use a saw to cut the top and bottom parts and a very sharp knife to cut the shade part. If you use a saw on the shade part it will shred the shades. I also tried to use a dremel tool with a tiny saw. The shades melted together. Use a strong clamp to hold the top and bottom tight to each other while cutting.
