a steam boiler, some of which may be normal. If there is a steam boiler, check its operation. The boiler components and about 3 times as a kettle chaude.Si a hot water boiler is inexpensive, then look at the pump, if the clutch is not rusted or brisé.Si, check the water level and pressure. You want 12psi 6Psi more for each floor above the boiler.
The water has sediment in it (minerals). The sediment has deposited the sediment in layers on the inside of the Water vessel. when the burner turns on the vessel transfers the heat to the sediment which transfers the heat to the water. When you have water between the layers or in Micro cracks of the sediment the water starts to boil. The water then causes pressure (steam) on and between the layers of sediment. The sound you hear is the water expanding like a little firecracker between the layers.
This is normal but an indicator that the water heater is aging. The average heater lasts 10-12 years, some as few as 4 depending on the water and usage.
