What are some opinions on an electric fence to keep my dog from jumping on my retaining wall?
Question : What are some opinions on an electric fence to keep my dog from jumping on my retaining wall?
There are trees and bushes (etc) that are on the level with the retaining wall… There are also ways that he can escape once he jumps up on the second level of my yard. I don’t want to go outside someday and him not be there. He’s a rott about 9 mo old and the wall is about 4 and a half ft tall. There is no way to build a fence up top so I think the electric fence is my only option… PLEASE HELP!

We have used an electric fence for very similar problems. None of the dogs have ever suffered from it. It just takes a couple of zaps and they learn quickly not do this. If a couple of zaps is what it takes to keep your dogs safe then you are doing the right thing. Go for it.
Make sure that your dog can’t jump right over the electric fence. I did have one dog who could leap high enough to clear the fence without ever touching the electric part. We had to re-configure the fence so that would not happen.
Personally, I feel that putting your dog on a leash or tying him up is by far more cruel and dangerous (they can get wrapped up and choke) than an electric fence. Yes, I have seen this happen.

what the hell? an eletric fence? NOOOOOOOO!!!!!!! if u put an eletric fence out there and ur dog gets shocked i can tell u that he will never want to come out in ur yard again becuz he fears it. put him on a leash and put some toys with tasty treats in them in the yard. just keep him on a leash dont hurt ur dog or eventually ur dog will fear you

Well… an electric fence would obviously be painful. Its something that I wouldnt to do, but in your situation, maybe you should try it. If he keeps shocking himself over and over then it would be useless and only painful. Maybe he will learn though. I’d say try it. Just try to watch him and make sure he’s not constantly getting hurt by it.

You could install an underground electric dog fence. You bury a wire around your yard that sends out very weak radio signals. Your dog wears a special collar that gives them a static shock if they get too close to the boundary wire.
The most important part of an electric dog fence is training the dog. You need to be extra diligent about training your dog (three 10 minute session a day for two week). If you are going to get an electric dog containment system you need to commit to the training, otherwise your dog will not be safe. When you hear people complain about how it did not work for them, inevitably it is because the owner did not do the training.
The two main options you have are DIY and professional installation.
DIY would take you about a weekend and cost about $ 300. (the link below shows you how) The advantages here are cost, and the disadvantages are the time it takes and that you have to take full responsibility for the training.
For professional installation Or you could call in a company like Invisible Fence for about $ 1500. (see link below) The advantage here is that it is much easier and you will have someone to help with the training.

We just got an electric fence and have been training our 4 yr old springer spaniel. We got him from the pound a year ago and he likes to run. We have a neighbor who has complained and threatened to call the police if he sees our dog out of his yard, so we thought we’d get the electric fence. Of course, we have been tying him up also, but we thought this would be better. So far it has not been better! Our dog only got shocked once, but now he won’t go outside at all! We are thinking of just going back to the leash. We have really tried with the training, so please don’t tell us we haven’t. Maybe he was just too old to start this?
