Stainless steel will scratch (think of a stainless steel sink and what it looks like after a few years), plus it definitely lacks the romantic cache of gold, platinum or other jeweler’s metals.

All metal can be scratched, even the hardest, which is platinum. All the metals you have described are good, but if you are looking for something that is durable, and really shines, I would recommend 18k white gold. 18k gold is 75% pure gold, and 25 % alloy.
