Ladies, if you were married to a man who was unwilling or unable to do repairs on your home?
Question : Ladies, if you were married to a man who was unwilling or unable to do repairs on your home?
and maintenance, would you learn to do it yourself? Or would you pay someone to do it? I’m talking about things like fixing leaking pipes, caulking a bathroom, replacing ceiling tiles, replacing a hot water heater, painting shutters, clearing gutters, etc.
This comes from someone who is a first time homeowner and lived in apartments for years with a maintenance man to fix things and who is clueless about tools and even the basics.

Get someone in to do it for you.
Women can’t do those jobs. They just cant – no ifs or buts about it.

I’d learn to do what I could, and if I didn’t have a friend that could help with things outside my ability, then I’d have to hire someone to do it…some of those things aren’t that difficult…I bought myself a tool kit years ago, and a power drill…and I learned to change the oil in my car (although I never ended up actually having to do it…LOL!)
A sense of accompishment, not to mention decent savings, comes with knowing how to DIY…

I would do it myself and have. I would certainly like to save the money. Of course I can’t do everything and would have to pay if it was too complicated. I also ask for advice and find that some employees are very willing to share their knowledge. My mother used to fix everything and it taught me one thing. If she can do it so can I.

mulga, women can do those jobs just fine. many people building houses today are women.
i know i do those sorts of things because my husband isnt able to. it would be good for you to learn. home depot even has classes on occasion for simple fix-it solutions. being able to say “i did that” is a lot more rewarding than just paying someone to do things for you. it can also be cheaper, if you know what youre doing.
however, if your husband is able to do this but refuses i would make him pay for the repairs. or pretend you know what youre doing, mess it up worse, THEN call someone to fix it. once the bills start adding up he will get off his lazy butt and do it himself.

It depnds on how handy you are .. and if you really want to learn how to do it. I can caulk and paint interiors but for the big stuff like water heaters where they have to be up to code and fixing leaking pipes where you need to be sure you do it 100%, I call someone. My husband isn’t that willing to fix things but he also is at work 90 hours a week so we do know quite a few people we can call.

Many of these jobs are easy to do. You can learn to do them yourself. Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t learn because you’re a woman. That’s nonsense. Go to youtube and type in what you’d like to learn to do, chances are you’ll find many videos that will show you (and explain along the way) how to do something. All you need is someone to show you and that’s what the internet is for! Start small and you’ll gain confidence with every task you accomplish! Good luck!

It depends, there are many things I am willing to learn and many other things that I would prefer to hire someone else to do. This is not a problem for me at present because I am married to a very handy man. He can figure out how to fix anything. When I was single and a homeowner I did many things myself: interior and exterior painting and caulking, stripping and staining wood, cleaning gutters, minor repairs. Some things I had friends help with me: prepping and laying a sub-floor, Some things I hired out: replacing the water heater (friends were busy and it couldn’t wait), laying carpet (although I tore the old stuff out).
It depends on what you feel comfortable doing (I stay away from gas and electricity), how much time you have and how much money you can spend.

go to home-depot or Lowe’s
they have do it herself classes
and do it yourself classes almost everyday
go on homedepot or lowes web page
and they have step by step instructions
if you go to the store ask someone to go over how to do it
if you can find someone to help you lol.
I use to work for home-depot
and I taught how to install flooring tile and laminate flooring.
save some money and do it yourself.
theres nothing more sexier than a woman who knows what to do with a tool. -

I would learn what I could myself, I honestly love to fix up things and paint and all that stuff… as far as replacing a hot water heater I would call someone to do that… I’m just not that handy. But as far as caulking a bathroom, painting shutters and clearing gutters – all that I would do, just because I like taking care of my own home.
