Why does my dog move blankets and pillows around before he settles?

Question : Why does my dog move blankets and pillows around before he settles?
I was watching my dog when he jumped on my chair and before he would lay down, he would dig into the blanket and move it around with his mouth and paws. Why does he do it?

he might just be getting comfortable. My dog does that also.

This is a dogs natural habit. If they were in the wild and had to lay like in dirt, they would dig a comfortable hole to lay in. My dog does it too, it is really funny because he wil even try to make a bed on the couch when there is no pillow or blanket there.

It’s a dogs natural instinct to do that. When they were wild they would move in a circle before settling down so the leaves and whatever would get patted down.

remember dogs are in the same species as wolves…and sometime those habits show even after hundreds of years of breeding……a wolf would dig dirt and leaves to make a sort of comfortable hole to sleep in..your dog is no different

Same reason you move your pillows where you want them before going to sleep. To make them more comfortable for him to lay on.

Its just to get comfortable and a security feeling. It is just like when you are lying in your bed trying to get comfortable. Its perfectly normal. I have three dogs and they all do this. There is nothing to be alarmed about.

to make it comfortable. if i were to go to my dog’s kennel and take the blanket off of there (he also has a bed in there) and if i were to fold it nicely and put it in there covering the whole bed he would go in there and mess it up and put it on one side and use it as a pillow. they r just trying to get comfortable
