Question : Do you need separate light kit power wiring when installing a ceiling fan?
Installing a hugger fan and light kit to replace a light fixture in a room. There is only one switch for the light. Once the fan is installed the light switch will activate power to the fan. The light kit will plug into the fan motor.
Will I require another set of power wiring and a switch in order to take advantage of the light kit? Can one set of wiring run both?

You can run both off the wiring you have. What you describe is the most common way to install a fan and light.
Your setup is the most common system for fans. Just plug in the light kit and use the chain pull cords to operate the fan direction and speed as well as the light
