It is less messy to cut a steel tub in half (or in 3 pieces) with a reciprocating saw and remove it in sections… especially if you are not tearing out the walls but just replacing the tub. A $60 reciprocating saw with a metal cutting blade will cut through a steel tub very quickly. One of my tenants just blew his brains out in his bathtub (RIP) and I had to remove the tub cleanly without destroying the rest of the bathroom.

An empty cast iron tub weighs about 350 lbs. Let’s assume you don’t plan to reuse the tub. You can break it into managable size & weight pieces with a small sledge hammer. This is a good opportunity to take out some aggression. Have fun. CAUTION!!! Wear protective eye wear & gloves. The coating will shatter like broken glass. The edges are very sharp.
