Question : Boiler service guys only!!?
Tapping/rapping noise driving us crazy!! I have an oil boiler, that heats our 1-zoned apartment, and also provides our hot water. Here is the problem: Everytime the heat is on (ciculator on), the flow check vavle is rapping and tapping the whole time. This noise travels throught he pipes and makes a hell of a racket. I know how to bleed the system, and I’m pretty positive its not air in the system. The only way I found to stop it is to bleed out water from the system, and lower the operating pressure inside the unit. As it builds back the pressure in 2-3 days, the tapping comes back. So basically, instead of operating just under 30 lbs of pressure, I bring it down to like 20 lbs. I pretty positive its the flow check, as I’ve spend hours in the basement using a piece of wood to my ear to listen to different parts of the unit. If its not the flow check, it is possibly another “flow” valve that is just above the expansion tank.
This is NOT your normal pipes tapping from air in the lines, like the baseboard pipes tapping. This is coming from inside a flow valve. I don’t want to go throught he hastle of replacing the valve, only to have this happen with a new valve. In other words, can this problem be due to something else wrong, such as a bad expansion tank or bad auto air vents near the boiler? I have baseboard heat, not radiators, and there are no bleeders anywhere in the apartment. The boiler is old, but works great otherwise. Any help much appreciated!

sounds like your fill valve is sticking allowing your pressure to build up. another thing is the expansion tank could be water logged or low on air pressure. there is normally a flowsetter valve in that type of system to prevent water migration during domestic heating, i have seen them go bad and make a racket when they fail…best answer call a service tech to go over the system
