@SanDiegoSunriser The filter usually screws in and the handle usually slides onto the end of the filter unless it is really old. If it is really old, then I would get a pair of plyers or visegrips and try uncrewing (counter-clockwise 360 degrees) then pulling stright out. Make sure water is turned off before doing this. Beyond then, you might have to call a local plumber and ask who might know your frig modle etc. for advise. Also, go to the frig website. Usually they have blogs to get info from

My neighbor just asked me to help change the water filter on her Westinghouse refrigerator. It’s located at the bottom and the old filter is supposed to pop out, but it isn’t doing that. (Seems to be stuck.)
Also, the outer knob came off and I’m unable to get it back on to help pull out the old filter.
Any ideas how I can get the old filter to pop out?
Thanks.
