New Delhi, 10 December: The problems with the change of second 6 billion people around the world from the traditional stove improved biomass stoves are so far into the health of the drive home message to be safe, that the process to achieve the requirements of commercial viability, demographic, meets reasonable pricing and financing options, Shell Foundation India Country Head Anuradha Bhavnani said at the Technical Consultation on “Advanced stoves for better health of women and children” organized by USAID here today.

Outline the findings of the current indoor air pollution awareness campaign in Shimoga District of Karnataka, said Mrs. Bhavnani, the four cardinal points, the requirements are, First, furnaces that meet the standards of the reduced emissions, second, that sustainable price points for business and scaling are Thirdly, funding opportunities and fourth, to give the government involvement at the base, to raise awareness scale programs. Jeor Blum, Deputy Director, Shell Foundation, chaired the session on enterprise solutions to poverty.

Shell Foundation has undertaken an extensive program of engagements in 111 villages in Shimoga is the district and the state administration, together, drive to raise awareness about the third largest cause of death in the country, Indoor Air Pollution (IAP).

“The Shell Foundation sees this campaign to raise as one of the most exciting and important developments in its Breathing Space program, which wants to achieve a significant reduction in long-term planning of the IAP so-called improved stoves, the more emissions and fuel consumption – and the development of a sustainable way to learn it in people’s homes, “said Jeroen Blum, Deputy Director, Shell Foundation.

Shell Foundation is supported by the Chief Minister’s Office received on its proposal for an inter-ministerial committee with participation of experts IAP, stove manufacturer name, MFIs, NGOs and others to develop a plan for state action. The State Government has positively considered the proposal Shell Foundation, a mission of turning districts with high fuelwood use in “Free IAP Districts,” starting with Shimoga District as a model adopted. The campaign is currently in operation in the Shimoga district in North Rhine-Westphalia has received the support of officials of the state and county government.

The campaign in Shimoga district is focusing an initiative of Shell Foundation to the promotion of internationally recognized, efficient and sustainable method to combat the IAP, namely “improved stoves”, which significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Currently, the program, taking the message to 111 villages in Shimoga district by a combination of on-ground static and interactive activities. The high intensity campaign will be conducted over a 90-day period from October to January 2009th

The campaign will also reach to the people through the active support of the district administration including health and education infrastructure, village level health workers and demonstration of the Campaign for Gram Panchayats.

The initiative follows a pilot campaign in IAP, Shell Foundation conducted in 2008 in the districts of Raichur, Koppal, Udupi and Mysore, which indicated that, although small changes to keep as “the kitchen window open,” “the installation of a fireplace or Fan “‘keep children away smoke’or’ use of dry firewood can” make a big difference in reducing IAP, then the final concentration to motivate people to change their behavior, with a focus on improved stoves.

Shell Foundation also has the concept of the “developed to standardize the herd, right on the campaign with the improved stoves. The brand as a “symbol of trust” is on the packaging and marketing materials of all improved stove manufacturer i. e. those strict tests appear to minimum exhaust emissions and fuel economy standards as they existed set by international bodies. The campaign will be to your doorstep with the concept of sustainable Householder activist, an active local village lady visiting various households and informing the villagers about the problems of the IAP and its solution – the use of improved stoves with the “standard mark of confidence will be taken “through stories and flip-chart distribution of leaflets. Stove Smoke-less demos are carried out at markets will benefit the villagers and the effective use of stoves introduced by giving them first-hand experience of the use of the furnace.
