What is your opinion about ceiling fans?

My friend wants to put a ceiling fan in our new living room. My personal opinion is that I do not like ceiling fans, but I want to get other peoples opinions. Are they as bad as I think they are or not?

they can be pretty useful, especially if you don’t have a/c. but, yeah they’re not real attractive.

Typically I think they are hideous, but I found several attractive ones at Lowes…I have one that is a retro-look silver, and one that is a British West Indies Style…those with the frosted cups remind me of a trailer in the 1970′s

My wife and I have ceiling fans in all our bedrooms and in our den, but not in the living room (I’d have to run a line for it and I’m not that adventurous). I like them just fine as long as they match the decor of the room, but I don’t love them so much that I just HAVE to have one in every room though.

Dust collector and just blowing hot air round and around, helps very little for cooling.

It really depends on the obverall look you want in the room. Very formal – no way. Casual whether modern or old fashioned can be good.

Bad points – they collect and circulate dust and so need to ne cleaned often. Improperly installed they can cause power bills to rise. Some ppl just do not like the way they look. They do make a room more casual than you may want. Sleeping directly under one or sitting for long periods is an almost guaranteed stuffed up nose.

Good points -Properly installed they can cut heat and cooling bills (note blades need to be shifted from summer to winter position and visa versa) They add a calm casual look some ppl like and the different colors and textures can go with a lot of decor styles.

Do you know what you don’t like about them and why he wants one? Talking this one out and each trying to see the other’s view point may be a good fondation for handling other differences.

Made a difference for me and my wife in our front room.It was always hot in the summer and was very uncomfortable.So we invested in a 3 speed fan and light from our local hardware store for less then £25 and we have never looked back.Looks great easy to fit and keeps us cool in the summer and can keep hot air circulated in the winter.

good thing in the summer, to move the air around, nice in winter gets the heat down from the ceiling.

They have a practical purpose but if you watch any of the shows where they make over a house to improve resale value, they always take them down in favor of more stylish lighting.
