In this global economic crisis we are presently going through, it is nice to know that you can still beautify your surroundings on a limited budget. But don’t get me wrong. There is one word that can change the overall look of your home for the better. That one word is wallpaper. To make wallpaper extremely easy to understand, I’m going to go over Color Groups, Design Groups, Types, Materials and Features. By the time I’m finished you will be an expert on Wallpaper. Okay, so here we go. When it comes to color groups, you have every shade imaginable. The following Color Groups represent the full spectrum of color shades for each color. The colors are blues, browns, greens, neutrals, oranges, purples, reds and yellows. You should be able to find the perfect shade of color you are looking for from the basic colors stated above. So now we will take a look at the different Design Groups. In alphabetical order they are Accents and Accessories, American/Armed Forces, Animals and Insects, Art and Architecture, Cities/States/Countries, Clothing and Accessories, Fruits/Vegetables/Foods/Beverages, Furnishings and Household Items, Games and Recreation, Kids, Kitchens, Men, Music, Other (See for yourself), People, Plaids/Stripes/Faux and Natural Finishes, Plants and Flowers, Religious, Shapes, Space, Sports, Themes and Eras, and Vehicles. They say that variety is the spice of life. At this point we will go over the different materials these wallpapers are made from. Fantastic kidâs room murals are fun and inexpensive. They add tons of personality and color to a room. Best of all, murals help create wonderful childhood memories that will last a lifetime. All you need to get started is a few craft supplies, a kid and some imagination!
Pick your wall. The great part about painting a mural is that you can totally customize it to the space in your childâs room. You can paint murals wall to wall, paint a single wall, paint the ceiling or just a wall section. Itâs completely up to you and your hearts desire!
Choose your characters. Grab your kids and their favorite story books. Look through and find your childâs most loved characters. Your kids will love this. Decide which ones you are going to place in your mural. Donât worry. No art skills are needed. You are not going to be free handing these drawings. Just pick the favorites. Itâs O. K. to mix and match characters form different books.
Create your background. Take a hint from Disney and Winnie the Pooh. Keep your background colors light and soft. This will allow your characters to really stand out. Unless you are artistically inclined, donât make this complicated. Take your sea sponge and dab on a very light soft blue color for the sky. Sponge all the way down to your designated horizon line. Use white to add fluffy clouds. Use a light soft color for the grass or ground. Use slightly different shades of green to sponge on some hills.
Add your foreground. This part is optional and can be as simple or detailed as you wish. Use stencils to add anything from flowers, butterflies & picket fences to sea shells, fish & seagulls. Use your sea sponge to dab on tree tops and foreground bushes. Use lighter green for bushes and trees far away and slightly darker shades for the ones close up.
Place your characters. Use a projector to project your characters directly onto the wall. Remember that characters made smaller will appear farther away. Lightly trace the characters. Try using chalk or a charcoal pencil when tracing. Mistakes wipe off easily! No projector? No sweat! Enlarge your characters on a photo copy machine. Trace them with a charcoal pencil. Place them on the wall charcoal side down. Firmly rub the tracing with a #2 pencil. The charcoal outline will transfer to the wall. Keep in mind that your character will be facing the opposite direction, so plan accordingly.
Paint your characters. This is no more difficult than using crayons in a coloring book. Grab your water cleanup craft paint and start painting. Stay in the lines. Use inexpensive sponge brushes for large and medium areas. Use detail brushes for the small stuff. Want to really make it pop? After it dries, outline it with a darker color. Refer to your story books for inspiration.
Your kids will be so excited; theyâll hardly be able to wait to show their new mural off to their friends. You might find yourself doing a little bragging too! Create a room that you and your child will never forget. Have fun. Be playful. Do it together.

How to Clean and Polish Stained Glass

It is important to clean and polish your stained glass to remove any tarnish or residue from the solder seams and capture the deep luster stained glass should have. For proper cleaning and polishing you will need finishing compound and polish. Finishing compound will remove tarnish and residue from solder seams. Polish is used to compliment the finishing compound. It provides a protective film and a shine that begs to be noticed.
Steps for Applying Finishing Compound
1. Pour finishing compound on your stained glass project. The project must be completely dry before applying finishing compound. Use enough finishing compound to lightly cover glass, solder seams and frame.
2. Use a clean cloth to spread the finishing compound over the stained glass piece.
3. Once the finishing compound dries and turns to a white film, use a soft scrub brush or cloth to buff off the compound.
4. Turn the piece over and repeat this process.
Steps for Applying Polish
1. Apply a small amount of polish to solder seams and frame.
2. Allow the polish to dry, then buff to a brilliant luster with a clean soft cloth.
3. Repeat this process for the backside of the panel.
Tips and techniques for Cleaning and Polishing Stained Glass
• To remove white crusty areas on stained glass, use baking soda and water to remove white crust, then rinse, dry and re-apply finishing compound.
• The frequency of cleaning stained glass can vary depending on the location of the stained glass piece, but a good general rule is to clean stained glass pieces yearly. This cleaning can be done with a clean damp cloth or with finishing compound. Do not use commercial window cleaners as they can damage the stained glass panel.
