No studs in the wall. . . how can I put up a closet clothes bar?

I bought a free standing closet system for my wife’s closet because there are no studs in the wall (I know, weird). There is one bar that is going to have to connect directly to the wall. I am worried that if I just drill it into the wall that it is going to rip out (like the last one did from the person we bought the house from). What can I put in that one place to make it secure?

Don’t worry, if you spend enough time in the closet, the studs will come out.

You can buy special wall plugs,that will “open up” and hold against the back of the plaster board.

(we can buy these in the UK, so I assume you can get them everywhere)

run a strip of wood from the ceiling to the floor in the closet. Use three wall anchors in each strip to attach to wall sides. Then attach clothes bar to the strip.

Screw two big eye hooks into the ceiling rafters and hang it from that. Good luck..

There has got to be studs in there somewhere. Just not where you need them. Take a 1×6 board and span it from one side of the closet wall to the other. Attach it with screws to the studs in the corners of the closet. Then attach your closet bar to the new board.

If drywall, it could be that it was framed 24″OC and if the closet is only 24″ deep, there are no studs in the middle where you need them. But there should be a nailer in the corner for drywall. If lucky, you may be able to nail a ledger strip (3/4″ x 1 1/4″ or so screen stock) at the right height to attach your bar. I just turn a stud sideways at the corners for drywall nailers when framing, but some people nail blocks between studs. So it may be a matter of luck. I also put a stud side ways in 12″ from the corners for closets to catch a closet rod or shelf.

If there are studs in the corners, then you could put two boards horizontally for each end of the bar. You could put a shelf atop the two boards for storing light-weight things.

I understand. The studs will be found in the corners only because of the narrow width of the typical/standard closet. Put a 2″ X 4″ board across the widith (at height you need) and secure into the corner studs. Now your board gives you the support to create the closet rod.

We continued by making shelves on those sides, too.
