Do I need to remove the vinyl flooring before installing laminate flooring?
I have vinyl flooring in my kitchen and I am going to install laminate flooring. Do I need to remove the vinyl flooring, or can the padding be placed over it? Thanks, any advise would be great.

YES….
Only if you are absolutely POSITIVE, that nothing will occur with this floor in the next 10-15 yrs, would it be OK.
Floors do buckle, glue pop, disintegrate, become (or are) un-level and etc. Having a floor that you can remove, prior to putting any new floor down, is ALWAYS wisest. You never know what additional issues the sub-floor may present as well.
Therefore, go to the most basic level you can and build up. Ensure yourself by taking this opportunity to do the job right the first time. To prevent any future issues from arising should be your only goal.
It is our job to tell to give the right advice. Even if it means more work and/or etc. A little heat, a scraper, and elbow grease is all it’s going to cost you to know you are doing the job right. Have some peace of mind.
Remove any tile, correct and address any issues with the sub-floor, and lay the new floor down.

No problem, just make sure you get the foam underlayment that is used with the laminate flooring, you’ll be just fine, OH, and a tip here, while at the home center for the flooring, if your doing it yourself, pick up a couple of tools for setting in the floor. a tapping block to help snap the pieces in place, a metal side tapper, and a bag of plastic wall separators. Make sure you start off Square, and since it’s a floating floor, check as you go for square, Good Luck,

One caution about laminate floors. They do not handle large spills or leaks of water well. The substrate will swell, the floor will buckle and bulge. We’ve had two neighbors who have had small undetected leaks from dishwasher that forced them to have most of their floors replaced.
We have a contractor in today redoing our guest bathroom. He said he is in the process of removing the laminate flooring from his kitchen because of water damage.

No you do NOT need to remove it as long as the vinyl is down well and is the only layer thats down. The floor must be flat and no dug up spots or bad spots. Use the regular or upgraded ( your choice) underlayment normally used under laminate.
It s always good to get to the subfloor to inspect it and will help you find any squeaks in the sub floor ( if any) , but YOU DO NOT need to remove it.
Any questions you can e mail me through my avatar. I ve attended several installation seminars as well as installed a few 100,000 s/f. GL -
