Lighting Options for the Contemporary Kitchen

0

Perhaps no other room in your home provides as many lighting options as the kitchen. Just about any type of ceiling or wall mount can work here, which can be both a good thing and a bad thing. Having this many choices at your disposal could be dizzying. Luckily for you, however, we are here to guide through the muck and arm you with the knowledge needed to make a wise choice in picking out your kitchen lighting.

The kitchen is a place that needs to be well lit. Preparing food, reading recipes, etc. , the kitchen is no place for mood lighting. Pay special attention to work station areas such as islands, sinks, and of course your range and stove area. This is where the magic happens in the kitchen, so make sure the focus of your lighting is on these areas.

A very popular trend in lighting recently is pendant lighting. Pendants are ideal for many areas of the kitchen, especially the aforementioned work station areas. If your kitchen has an island, consider a row or cluster of pendants to provide the precise lighting needed for this area. Many pendants are low voltage and use energy-efficient bulbs, making them an environmentally sound option as well as a stylish one.

Other ceiling options include flush and semi-flush mounts, as well as smaller chandeliers. Flush and semi-flush mounts are no longer just boring square and circular fixtures as in years past. These updated fixtures can be found with exquisite detailing and original designs.

Wall lighting options for the kitchen are also plentiful. Sconces and wall lamps can add a decorative flair to your kitchen while acting as an excellent source of secondary light to the ambient light provided by a ceiling fixture. Wall fixtures are especially important if you use pendant lighting instead of a ceiling mount. Pendants will often not provide enough light for your kitchen, and wall lamps and sconces are ideal for picking up the slack.

Can anyone give advice on choosing recessed lighting for a kitchen?

We have 12 foot ceilings, honey colored cabinets, formica countertops. Our kitchen isn’t very big and I want something simple. My brother in law is an electrician and able to install them but I don’t know where to begin. Also, we’re on a budget so I don’t want to most expensive. Maybe something I can find at Lowe’s or Home Depot.

Will the universe expand past light speed?

5

If the universe continues to expand at an ever increasing rate, and there’s no limit to how fast it can expand, does that mean it will go past light speed?
Or is the limit light speed?
And if the limit is light speed, what happens when(and if?) that happens?
Or am I thinking this whole thing in the wrong way?

How do I wire a bathroom light switch (pull cord)?

Interior Design and Interior Decorating – Some Definitions

0

Interior Decoration and Interior Design, although related disciplines, are different in terms of their application. Interior Decoration is the process of decorating a house with regards to finishes (for example wallpaper and paint, choice of furnishings and fixtures as well as adding finishing touches and decorations such as paintings and objets d’art. All of this provide a certain “feel” to a house but essentially the underlying structure of the house is not changed.

Interior decoration is normally professionally done by Interior Decorators although recently there is a movement for people towards learning about Interior Decorating through various courses or books and then apply the techniques themselves – usually on a shoestring budget. The whole objective of Interior Decoration is to make a house aesthetically pleasing and at the same time, unique, since it should reflect the owner’s specific personality and tastes.

Interior design on the other hand is more integrated with the architecture of a building and a professional Interior Designer will work closely with architects and builders to make choices regarding the integral design of the whole house or building. This includes looking at choices with regards to room layout, choice of cabinets and tiles and a whole host of other design factors. While previously the Interior Design budget for new developments was minimal, it is recognized these days that incorporating Interior Design into the project means the difference between a mediocre development and one that contributes to the branding and life-style image of the project. The money spent on Interior Design is therefore seen as a worthwhile investment in the whole property development process.

Homeowners are spending more and more to improve their homes. Since it is relatively easy to change the whole look of a house by changing the finishings, furnishings and fixtures a large portion of this money goes into Interior Decorating. The growing popularity in do-it-yourself Interior Decorating has meant that a whole industry around Interior Decorating books, TV Shows and courses have also sprung up, and it has become a popular hobby for married couples. Innovative Interior Decoration ideas, which cost less but at the same time giving the impression of style and class, are in vogue.

Young entrepreneurs have also seen the gap and there is a growing demand for information and courses on how to break into the Interior Design and Interior Decorating Industry. This has also given the home interior decoration industry a boost.

Although the trend recently is for people to tackle the exciting task of transforming a house themselves, it has to be recognized that this falls more in the area of Interior Decorating. Interior Design still requires study of the context of Interior Design, the theory of good design, knowledge of the technical advances in the engineering industry for both residential as well as commercial buildings and knowledge of the latest trends and advances in the Interior Design industry.

In short, an Interior Design project in which all the elements of design are pulled together is still the ambit of the professional designer who should be able to deliver on projects that extend beyond the boundaries of a hobby pastime.

The ceiling light bulbs in my kitchen keep on overheating and got burned out. How do i avoid this?

Is there any specific kind of light bulb that i should be using to avoid overheating? I find it really annoying having to change the light bulbs almost every week. Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks!

can you spray paint lamp shades?

12

I have some gold colored lamp shades that my wonderful son drew on with a sharpie. Is there anyway to just spray paint them white or will it completely ruin them to do this? We have a birthday party on Saturday and I really don’t want to have to go out and buy new shades. I personally have no problem buying new ones, but my husband does. Thanks!
They also have water stains on them from getting water spilt on them. Yes, I know, this is a crazy house.
