how can i decorate a fireplace mantel with a window above it? the mantel is also 31 inches deep!!!?
this is in a newly built home. the gas fireplace is “boxy” and protrudes into the room 31 inches. the bottom of the window is only a few inches above the mantel. it’s such a big space and whatever is on the mantel will also be in front of the window, I want to get the scale right.

At first I thought the vases were a good idea, and then I read your description again. It sounds like the room will have a rustic, earthy look, and if that’s the case, glass will look out of place. If not, it sounds beautiful.
Just in case I am right about the earthy look, with the mantle 31` inches deep and the fire place boxy, I think you are going to need a single heavy piece to balance out the look. What comes to mind is the cast iron look which is also a heavy, earthy look that would go with the boxy fire place and deep mantle. I’d look for a big heavy candle Abra and use an accent colors for the candle-plus try them in different sizes to add even more interest. When you light the candles or the fireplace for that matter your window and room would reflect the fires beautifully! -

Whatever you place on your mantle, is going to have to look good from both sides. So I would start with buying three pillar holders (three different sizes) and three pillars to place on them. Get the colors that coordinate with your room color. The holders can be wood or metal, whichever you prefer. The pillars are not to burn necessarily, just for decoration. A quality silk floral arrangement would soften the look and then some vases of different heights would also unify the look. The vases need to be made of the same material, either metal or glass. I would also lay garland amongst your items on the mantel. I don’t mean pine garland, but rather beaded garland or a summery soft greenery with leaves and possibly little flowers. Bend it around your display, kind of like a river would flow (S-shaped). This display should look nice from inside the house as well as outside through the window. Good luck!!!

Small vases of different shades of see through glass would be cute. (Especially when the sun shines through them and into the room.)
