alternatives to roller shades. . . ?

I really like the blackout feature on roller shades. But I rent and will be moving soon. I don’t want to spend the money on blackout roller shades for my kids’ bedrooms, especially since I have to have them custom made for their windows. Does anyone have any good ideas for alternatives? I don’t want blankets, etc. hanging on their windows. Any ideas?

We always used nice decorative flat sheets in past apartments. When hung properly they look like regular curtains. Snip the stitches at the ends of the top where it is folded over and slide a curtain rod through it. Two twin sized sheets will cover most windows. Leave them long by hanging the curtain rod high. That way if you are seamstress challenged you won’t have to sew them. Also make sure your sheets are a solid color or your neighbors may complain of seeing sponge bob square pants!

You may use vertical panels of any material you choose… 2 or 3 are enough for one window and they have a similar blackout effect but not as strong as shades will give…
Another thing, if your kids are of a suitable age, then ask them what they desire… always involve the kids in decisions regarding their room…

Alternatives to blackout shades will probably cost as much to buy or make as the real thing. Home and garden stores such as Home Depot or Rona usually sell Levelor “room darkening” white vinyl roller shades. They are an inexpensive, in stock item in a variety of widths and ( at Rona for sure ) can be cut down to your custom size width free of charge at the time of purchase. Should you move you could hopefully reuse them by cutting them again if required, to fit new windows. If not, you won’t be wasting a lot of money anyways. Though they are plain white, you could always dress them up with a valance or side panels. You could make these from an extra sheet of your bedding material, and take these matching window dressings also if you move.
One thing to remember about blackout roller shades is that you should hang them on the outside of the window and trim so that it covers the window frame. If hung inside the frame the light will seep in through the sides because the hardware on the top of the roller shade is slightly wider than the vinyl fabric panel, so not all of the glass will be covered..
