We just bought a house with 3 wood fireplaces with gas starters each. Can we gas logs instead of wood?

If you think buying the gas logs are expensive just wait until you start using them! that is where the real cost comes in. If you have standard vented gas log units they will pull heated air from your home and toss it up the flue with most of the combustion heat from the fire.

So you think fine I will buy a ventless unit and keep the damper closed so i can keep my heat, right? we the ventless units put dangerous levels of NO2 into the home. I just reviewed a study done by the University of Illinois Urbana-Champagn over the last 3 years in 30 houses on ventless gas logs. The results were compelling that the NO2 levels in the homes were at a dangerous level but yet their “failsafe detectors” would not shutoff the units since they did not detect NO2.

So what is a fella to do right? Well you can seal the fireplace up tight with a chimney balloon and burn low/no soot candles or go with an electric fireplace insert. Sealing the flue will save the heat in your home and the candle or electric insert will still give you some flickery enjoyment. Or If you have a few $K to spend on each fireplace you can get direct vent firepalces.
