If you want a decent guard, you probably shouldn’t use contracted security. They typically give their guards the worst pay rates, minimal or nonexistent benefits, and only the minimum training that’s legally required by the state they’re in (which is a joke, even in the states that regulate the security industry more strictly). You’ll likely wind up with somebody who’s little more than a warm body in a cheap polyester uniform who’s there just for show and unable to do anything more complicated than keeping a logbook or running around a building hitting keys. If that’s all you need, then fine, but God forbid there’s ever an incident where you’d need him to protect life or property. You’re better off getting together with a security consultant and hiring a guard in-house instead, and have him help you with the qualifications and background checks, and preferably hire an off-duty cop who’s moonlighting.

My girlfriend used to work at a bank in a large city. They got robbed a couple times and decided to hire a security guard (unarmed). The security guard firm charged 30/hour to the bank while the actual guard only made about 9.25/hr. That is pretty pathetic if you ask me. Its extremely expensive to contract a security company to provide security to your agency.

Depends on what city you are in, but typical hourly costs to customer are: unarmed guard, $15 to $20 per hour, armed guard, $18 to $25 per hour. There is usually a $5- $7 per hour additional charge for work on holidays.
In some areas, you can also hire off-duty law enforcement officers. You pay a lot more (around $40 per hour) but you usually get a much better qualified person.
